BirdingBreaks in Estonia

Laurens from BiringBreaks team spent 5 days bird watching in Estonia with our guides Rein and Bert. They saw Stellar´s Eiders, woodpeckers- grey headed, black, white- back, tree-toed, lesser spotted; owls- Pygmy, Ural; Grouses- Hazel Hen, Black Grouse, Capercaillie. All together about 98 bird species.

Steller´s Eider in Tallinn

Usually our groups go to Saaremaa ( the biggest island in Estonia) to watch Steller´s Eider but in this March people have seen the bird in Paljassaare quite often. They were small group- 9 female and 1 male bird, birds were feeding up near coast.

Hibernating brown bear..

While working Ahto run into hibernating brown bear. Bear ran off when a man was 15 m from the nest. The track was 12-13 cm wide. Its unusual to find hibernation nest in alder forest. The nest was 35 m from road.

Brown bear hide in winter

Ahto was in brown bear hide area. There are a lot of snow, which gave him good opportunity to look at the tracks- elk, fox, mountain hare close by were pine marten and wild boar tracks. Brown bears still have their hibernation but there are  smell of spring in the air.
